Her next door neighbor, growing up, was a victim of casual parenting. Sure, it was cool in high school. She had no curfew, and her parents turned a blind eye when it came to alcohol, cigarettes, and sex.  It seemed like the perfect life. Perfect, that is, until she found out she was pregnant. And then pregnant again, eleven months later. She kept and raised the boys in the fashion in which she was raised. It turned out that their lives were even less productive than hers.

Her oldest son, Matthew, grew up to be a jewel thief and unlicensed dentist. Packing his patient's mouths full of novacain, he would extract teeth and force small rubies up into their gums. Ensuring them that it was merely a routine cleaning, he would replace the tooth without the patient ever knowing. With his fortune hiding in the mouths of his patients, he could never be caught by the authorities.
